February, 2021

We tried something new this month and offered a free EFS t-shirt to one lucky winner. To enter we asked social media followers who took a class or attended an event at Ely Folk School to leave a comment and tell us what their favorite memory was. As we plan for the busy summer months it is nice to hear your feedback. Here is what people said!

“I enjoyed helping out a couple nights in 2018 for the birch bark canoe build! Fun community event”

“So many great memories!! The singer/songwriter night with Joey Kenig, Louis Bartholome, and Aurora Bear was a very special night”

“Took the needle felting a loon class with folks from around the country. Very fun even on Zoom”

“Loved the potica class with Mary Louise. She had lots of good stories about Ely”

“I agree, I loved the potica class I took as well! My mom and my sister were visiting and we took the class together. Mary Louise still asks me how they are doing every time she sees me Oh, and now we have potica at Christmas every year”

“Chaga class with @birch.botanicals ❤️ I learned so much and continue to use her products”

“We haven’t yet! Would love to this summer though”

“So many favorites! Birch bark canoe building! Learned the constellations in Night Sky classes with Astro Bob, made an alder branch chair for my front porch, learned how to sew a shirt in a day, made a balsam fir holiday wreath, enjoyed holiday potlucks and community dances! Ely Folk School is a treasure”

Brazilian Pastries

“I took an online class on making pasties. My favorite part was getting to know the mining history of Ely and having it taught by our neighbor, Lacey”

“I’ve only visited the building for a craft show during one of Ely’s celebrations. I look forward to taking a class in person when the time is ready”

“Dy Korda’s recent poetry workshop!! Just magic. She creates an open, welcoming and gentle space. Gorgeous writing was shared”

“So hard to pic a favorite! Mary Louise’s pasty class gave me confidence with pastry, and Gary’s feta cheese making opened me up to a whole new level of homemade cooking”

“Gary’s feta cheese class was excellent. I feel like I have the tools to make many cheeses now. Lacey and Beth’s taco class inspired many taco variations afterward. I can’t wait to take a Rosemaling class. Love EFS! ?”

“Loved all the new crafting techniques from each class: watercolors, pine needle baskets and wool felting. Great class comraderie and instruction”

“No, but I sure can’t wait to!”

“I love when EFS brings guest speakers! @lylajune was fantastic. My whole family missed attending pot lucks and other gatherings ❤️”

“Kim Garrett represents the amazing artists and teachers at the Ely Folk School. She has studied with artists in the US and Norway, and her work had won numerous medals. Through the COVID pandemic, she has kept the art of Rosemaling and Dalmaling alive through offering online classes at numerous folk art schools. She has kept these important Scandinavian folk arts alive, while challenging artists to paint in various mediums. Kim is a tribute to the artists of the past, present, and future”

“Not yet but hope to soon”

“I have taught 2 classes there. Everything about my experience was wonderful! The school is very accommodating for my needs, and the students were engaged and a delight”
