Rosemaling means “rose or flower painting” in Norwegian. The Norwegian Folk-art of Rosemaling began around 1750. This class will focus on the Os style, which originated in the Os region in western coastal Norway, known for its fanciful flowers and bright colors, making it quite different from many of the other styles of rosemaling.

We will start by learning the basic strokes of rosemaling, progress through color mixing and working with oil paints, and finally paint your own design to bring home or give as a gift.

About the Instructor: Kim Garrett has been rosemaling since 2007 and has studied with several “Gold Medal” winning American rosemalers as has traveled to Norway three times to study traditional 18th century rosemaling design with Norwegian rosemaling instructors. She has also taken lessons in Sweden in the Swedish folkart painting style, Dalmaining. She has won several blue ribbons at the MN state fair for her rosemaling, received the Best in Show twice, and gets rave reviews from Ely Folk School students.
