Pysanky – Ukranian Easter Eggs
Mar 21 @ 10:00 am – 1:00 pm

Saturday, March 21, 202010:00 AM – 1:00 PM

Tuition: $30 Materials: $3

Throughout Eastern Europe, beautifully decorated eggs mark the coming of Spring. You will learn the centuries-old technique of drawing designs on egg shells with a kistka (a tiny funnel mounted on a handle) using melted beeswax. The egg is then dyed and additional designs are drawn, followed by more dyeing. After the final dyeing, the egg is gently heated to remove the wax and reveal the design. We will also talk about the traditional meanings of the design elements, a brief history of the eggs, and folk legends associated with pysanky. You will leave class with one or two completed eggs and a hand-out on designs.

The instructor will supply all the materials. For those interested, additional kits will be available for purchase at cost.

About the instructor: Theresa Hornstein has 37 years experience teaching at the college level and 20 years teaching assorted craft classes (knitting, crochet, natural dyes, eggs, henna) at Ely Folk School, North House Folk School, Duluth Folk School, American Swedish Institute, Yarn Harbor, and Duluth Art Institute.

She says, “From the time I learned to knit and crochet at age 5, I have loved practicing traditional crafts. Whether it is experimenting with natural dyes, recreating knit and crochet designs, or exploring other folk arts, working with my hands is a refuge from the modern world and is a way to connect me to the past.”
