Rosemaling in the Telemark Style

The Norwegian Folkart of Rosemaling began around 1750 and is a style of decorative painting on wood that uses stylized flower ornamentation, scrollwork, lining and geometric elements, often in flowing patterns.

Rosemaling means “rose or flower painting” in Norwegian. This class will focus on the Telemark style, known for it’s graceful scrolls and fantasy flowers.  We will start with preparing the base coat on our wooden object, learn the basic strokes of rosemaling, progress through color mixing and working with oil paints, and finally paint your own design to take home.  No experience necessary.

About the Instructor: Kim Garrett has studied this traditional Scandinavian craft with American master painters and Norwegian rosemaling instructors both here and in Norway since 2007 and has created several award winning pieces.
